Back to basics for a healthy lifestyle

As you guys know I've been trying to lead a healthier lifestyle lately.

It isn't easy though.

Especially with constant reports on how we shouldn't eat this, that's bad for you, this is gonna cause you to die and shrivel up to a nothing! Then when we are in full swing of something and feel we're being healthy, all of a sudden that's a no no too! It's all so confusing!!

I've been thinking about this, a lot, and I really think we need to take the healthy lifestyle 'back to basics'.

We can get so snowed under and overwhelmed with what's good for you, what diet plans we should be following and basically what we should or shouldn't be consuming.

Use restaurants for example. When they get all fancy, most of the time it doesn't work. Mark and I found this a lot, especially living out in the Middle East being surrounded by fancy pants restaurants and even back in the UK, they try too hard and it doesn't work. They need to 'go back to basics'.

Stripping everything back to the basics pretty much works for everything in your life, especially when it comes to a healthy lifestyle.

Keep things simple. Easy. Do-able. That way it will become a natural, healthy lifestyle.

So here's my 'Back to Basics' on trying to obtain a healthier lifestyle. In no particular order!

* Sleep - Seriously get enough sleep!

When I've had a really good sleep I weigh less - yep you can lose weight in your sleep (I think it's to do with the body repairing itself at night).

Also, I'm way more productive and alert when I've slept well and happier too! Seriously, if you wake up early and still feel knackered, go back to sleep!

You will be far more productive for the rest of the day then if you try to power through the tiredness! Obviously though, if you have Work, School, College, Uni etc I wouldn't recommend sleeping in and missing them or being late, haha, tempting as it is!!

Seriously, you know what I mean - Just sleep and have early nights and lay ins when you can! You really do feel a million times better!

*Water - I'm sure you've heard it all before, but water is so good for you!

It flushes out all the nasty toxins in your body, it gives you clear skin, cures headaches, helps you lose weight and does all sorts of goodness to your insides!

Have you noticed that on every diet plan they advise you to up your water intake? This is why! So carry a bottle of water wherever you go and drink, drink, drink!

*Lay off the Alcohol - It's empty calories and bloats you big time! Enough said.

*Exercise - A little bit each day can make a huge difference!

I know whenever anyone suggests you to do exercise you automatically think of the gym.

'Can't do that, costs money, haven't the time, haven't the clothes, don't like gyms'.

I know this, as it's me saying that!! I'm really not a gym goer - don't get me wrong, I really admire and even slightly envious of those of you that have the motivation and determination to go to the gym regularly, but it just isn't me.

I have tried many time in the past, but I just can't get into it. But that's fine, as the gym isn't the be all and end all when it comes to exercising.

My exercising consists of walking and doing some yoga stretches at home, press ups, sit-ups and most recently, planking! It's all free and I love my walks... it doesn't feel like exercise at all!

That's the key with doing regular exercise, you have to enjoy what you're doing otherwise you'll give up and be back to square one. So find that exercise you enjoy, whether it's walking, jogging, running, swimming, going to the gym, even try out some different exercise classes, there are so many different ones these days, there certainly seems to be something for everyone!

Most importantly, get moving! Even dancing around your lounge counts!!

*Don't over-indulge - We all know this one!

And I am the worlds biggest binge eater! I can't just have 'one biscuit' or 'a slice of cake' I have the lot!

But as you get older, the weight takes longer to shift, which I'm starting to notice, haha.

Sometimes it just won't budge.

I don't believe in depriving yourself, as this will definitely lead to binge eating, so it's all about learning self control (which I'm trying to work on!) and having a 'sensible' portion!

*Low carbs - This is one of my downfalls. Carbs. I bloody love them!

I swear I'm addicted to bread. I can munch on it all day! It's terrible, I have to be strong at the supermarket and not put the whole bread aisle in the trolley!

Trying to find alternatives and the 'good' carbs is the way forward. Like switching to brown pasta and brown rice, keeping the portions low. Also, sweet potatoes are a better option. I'm still working on the bread, haha. Again, like I said above it's all about having a 'sensible' portion and not over indulging.

I've also found that weight watchers bread is really low in carbs and tastes great. Definitely my go-to bread these days!

I know these things aren't rocket science or revolutionary at all, we all know it, but we need to go back to it. Back to the basics.

When I do these things on a regular basis I do actually feel better, have more energy and it keeps my weight down. It's a no brainer really!

Once we've mastered the basics then it's time to incorporate the 'other' healthy things we personally like to have.

For example, I love my herbal teas. I hardly have a 'normal' tea in the morning anymore! I've really got in the habit of having my hot water with lemon or my matcha tea in the morning - see my posts on them here and here.

And I feel loads better for it!

As you know, I've also recently done the Forever Living C9 - all about it here - which was amazing, but it's a nine day detox, rather then a diet. I love things like this, along with completely detoxing your insides, it also helps you to retrain your brain and really understand that we don't need to be overindulgent!

For example because of the C9, I learnt that a 600 calorie meal is actually adequate and which foods are the 'good' ones to snack on and which ones are low in GI.

I really think if we strip back to basics on our healthy food ideas we can all lead a healthier, happier lifestyle!

Mil Palmeras

Happy Thursday guys, hope you're all well. I'm just popping on here to show you a few pictures I snapped quickly today while we were at Mil Palmeras Beach. We popped to Mercadona this morning, well more lunchtime(ish) as we are sleeping in so much lately, but that's for another day.
